Pre-Implantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD)

Pre-Implantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD) technique is used when one or both the parents have a genetic abnormality and PGD testing is performed on the embryo during IVF to determine if it carries a genetic abnormality or disorder. PGD technique allows for genetically normal embryos to be transferred in IVF treatment, ensuring that newborn offspring will be free of the hereditary or genetic disease that the newborn parents carry. We have top specialists associated with us for IVF and Surrogacy accross India and abraod.

IVF PGD for Baby Boy

Choosing to do family balancing with PGD, along with your IVF-ICSI treatment doesn’t affect the duration of your infertility treatment. After your egg collection, if the eggs are successfully fertilized, a biopsy is taken from each embryo and tested through PGD. The healthy embryos of the desired gender in family balancing are then transferred back to the uterus during IVF treatment.

The steps involved in IVF procedure may vary from patient to patient depending on the recommended treatment plan but typically involve:

  • 10-12 days of the ovarian stimulation with the use of hormone injections.Medication types and doses are monitored with regular scans and blood tests throughout this period.
  • On the final day of ovarian stimulation, usually 36 hours prior to your egg collection, an hCG injection will be given in order to mature the eggs.
  • Egg collection under mild general anesthetic generally at the same time as sperm collection.
  • Insemination or ICSI typically occurs the day of egg collection.
  • Highly Experienced and Renowned Doctors & Fertility Specialists.
  • Embryo transfer is performed 2-5 days after egg collection, depending on the number and quality of the embryos.A blood test to determine pregnancy is performed 14 days after egg collection.
  • A blood test to find out pregnancy is performed 14 days after egg collection.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Everything you really need to know about IVF with PGD
Any genetic disease or the long-term chronic ailments that could be passed on from one parent or from the both to their newborn offspring with a known mutation that can be prevented using IVF and PGD. Some of the major genetic diseases that can be prevented using IVF and PGD technique include: Cystic Fibrosis, Tay-Sachs Disease, Sickle Cell Anemia, Spinal Muscular Atrophy, and Thalassemia.
Before completing PGD technique, the inherited or genetic disease that one or both parents carry must be identified through genetic screening or PGD. Once the genetic abnormalities or disease has been identified, completing PGD with an IVF-ICSI cycle does not change the duration of the IVF treatment. Following with the Egg Retrieval, if the eggs are fertilized successfully, a biopsy is taken from each embryo and tested through PGD technique. The healthy embryos are then transferred to the uterus. The following steps take place over 15 to 20 days.
  1. Ovarian Stimulation (7 to 10 days)
  2. Egg Retrieval (OPU)
  3. Sperm Collection and ICSI
  4. Pre-Implantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD)
  5. Embryo Transfer (ET)
Comprehensive Chromosomal Screening may be completed at the same time as PGD technique and if you would like to further screen embryos for chromosomal abnormalities or gender. Be sure and don't forget to discuss Chromosomal Screening option with your physician.
The Pre-Implantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD) is secured and 99% to 100% guarantee is given to the couples to select the desired sex of the embryos for pregnancy. In PGD technique the embryos are chosen and selected before pregnancy occurs, family balancing in PGD reduces the chance of termination of pregnancy, miscarriage or abortion if desired sex is not achieved in the treatment. The embryos in IVF treatment are diagnosed to detect the genetic abnormalities or disorder, which simply means that only the healthy embryos get the chance and are selected to get into the womb. In the process of PGD, there are some left-over embryos after the IVF treatment, which can be stored in a frozen condition or embryo freezing can be done in the lab and can be used in case of miscarriage or at the time of next pregnancy.
Pre-Implantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD) is really very expensive for the common people. The PGD technique disadvantage is that it comes with the risk of getting twins because in some cases of IVF treatment two embryos can be implanted together inside the womb that turns in the twin pregnancy. Some people believe embryos as human life and for them; this will be a great concern of how to use the unused embryos left after the treatment? Some people cannot decide whether embryos should be donated to some other couples or discarded or embryo freezing can be done for future pregnancy. This concern may cause a serious issue for those couples who consider the left embryos as human lives. However, the success rate of family balancing with PGD/Pre-Implantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD) is very high and every year more and more couples are taking this test to diagnose the genetic abnormalities and to determine the sex of their unborn baby.
Over the years many couples have benefited from the use of Pre-Implantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD). If you answer yes to any of the following questions, PGD technique may be helpful for you:
  1. Are you a woman over 35?
  2. Have you experienced several miscarriages?
  3. Have you had a prior pregnancy with a chromosome abnormality?
  4. Have you experienced several failed IVF cycles?
  5. Has conceiving been difficult due to a low sperm count?
  6. Do you or your partner carry a balanced structural chromosome rearrangement?
  7. Do you or your partner have an autosomal dominant genetic disease such as Marfan syndrome?
  8. Do you have a family history of Huntington disease?
  9. Do you or your partner carry a recessive genetic disease such as cystic fibrosis?
  10. Do you or your partner carry an X-linked genetic disease such as hemophilia or Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy?
